Grand Prairie, Texas started out when settlers built communities in the area of modern day Grand Prairie and Joe Pool lake. Alexander Dechman bought about two hundred and forty acres in what is now downtown Grand Prairie, and later granted rights to the railroad to build through the property. The community was known as Dechman until the railway built a depot there in 1876, renaming the community Grand Prairie, because it was on the edge of the western prairie. In the early 1900s, the town finally became incorporated, started their school system, and built businesses. The city was slow to adopt more modern advances like water, gas, and fire departments. In 1941, because of World War Two, North American Aviation was built next to the naval air base in Grand Prairie. This brought a huge number of workers and growth to the town, which grew from around a thousand people to almost fifteen thousand during the 1940s. In 1950 the Uptown Theatre opened, which is still standing and in use today. Grand Prairie continued to grow in size, adding infrastructure, schools, and shopping into modern times.

Grand Prairie has many different opportunities for entertainment and shopping within its borders. Whether you enjoy being active outside, listening to good music, or doing some shopping, there’s something for everyone. Grand Prairie offers easy access to the DFW metroplex via I-20, I-30, and 360, which all surround the city. In the middle of historical downtown is Market Square, a public park where the farmers market is located every Saturday morning during the summer season. There are all sorts of local vendors offering produce, baked foods, meat, and gifts.

Grand Prairie has many outdoor areas where you can enjoy the Texas weather! It is easy to spend a day with friends and family at Joe Pool Lake, with two parks in Grand Prairie that have access to the lake. Lynn Park is open throughout the summer and offers a beach with a swimming area, picnic areas, a sand volleyball court, and two boat ramps. Lloyd Park is larger and offers hiking and biking trails as well as a beach, picnic and playground areas, and more boat ramps. There are over two hundred campsites, and some lake front cabins for rent. If you’re not feeling like camping out, Grand Prairie boasts some of the best golf courses in Texas to practice your game. Tangle Ridge Golf course sits to the south of Joe Pool lake and offers scenic views and rolling hills, with many good rankings in state and nationally. Another area of interest in Grand Prairie is Lone Star Park located north of I-30. It is a class-one race track that attracts thoroughbred horses, and large crowds to take part in the fun!

If you’re in the mood for some shopping, the newest shopping center is the Grand Prairie Premium Outlets off of I-20. Boasting many popular stores at outlet prices, it is a favorite shopping destination in the DFW area. There is also one of the largest flea markets in Texas at the Trader’s Village in Grand Prairie. It is open every weekend, and has over three thousand dealers, so you are sure to find anything and everything there. If you are looking for entertainment, there are plenty of shows to catch at the historic Uptown Theatre, which was built by two brothers in 1950, and has since been restored as a multi-purpose performing arts center. If you’re in the mood for a larger act, Verizon Theatre is a popular large concert venue that hosts well known performance artists and bands.
