Bedford began as a small settlement in the 1840s. A man named Milton Moore started a small school, and in the 1870s, the community grew and built a general store and gristmill. The settlement was named Bedford, in honor of the small county in Tennessee that many of the settlers came from. By the 1890s, the town was booming with its own post office, church, and shops along Bedford Road. The community also built Bedford College, which was a high school and college that thrived until a fire destroyed it in the early 1890s. In 1915, the city built a new two story brick building for the school which is now called Old Bedford School and is a historical building in the middle of town where events and weddings can be held. In the beginning of the 1900s, the town went through a period of decline as the new Dallas-Fort Worth inter-urban Railroad was built, along with several highways closer to Fort Worth and Arlington. Traffic was now going away from Bedford, and citizens moved to be closer to those quickly growing cities. At one point, only about eighty people were left living in Bedford, along with the general store which was run by a local family until the 1960s.
During the later 1900s, there were many disputes on whether the city should merge with ever growing Hurst or Euless, but the city managed to stay incorporated through multiple voting periods. The finishing of Dallas- Fort Worth Airport in the late 1970s brought growth to the city in the 1980s and the population and businesses continued thriving through modern times.
Modern day Bedford is nestled in between several different cities, and has great access to the airport and DFW metroplex. It is a quiet place to live, with many great homes. Bedford strives to have a small town feel, with many events for the family, a large outdoor mixed use area called Bedford Boys Ranch, and even a little Farmers Market shop. Within the Boys Ranch grounds is the Activity Center and Bedford Splash Aquatic Center, a city owned water park for all ages. It is a large facility with fun for the whole family that is right in the heart of town. If you are more into sports, there are plenty of fields for soccer, baseball, trails for walking and running or even a lake and fishing pier at the Bedford Boys Ranch Activities Center.
