Arlington, Texas was founded in 1876, as a small settlement alongside the railroad. In January, 1877 the US Postal Service first recognized Arlington as a city, and mail began to be delivered. The city grew slowly until 1891, when a well was drilled in the middle of town, on Main and Center. The well grew in popularity and people came to live in the city because of the rumored medicinal properties in the water. The well didn’t last long, and was capped in 1951 because of growing traffic in the area.
During that time the city grew, and people began building a row of brick and mortar shops along Main street, and creating schools. In 1917, citizens of Arlington decided that they wanted higher education within the city. They decided to start a small school that went through many changes before being known as Arlington College in 1949. It continued its growth in higher education before becoming the University of Texas at Arlington in 1967, where it flourished. UTA is now known for being an excellent place to get a college degree. With many well known programs such as engineering, nursing, and fine arts, the college continues to grow each year. They have recently expanded the school with College Park- an area of high-end apartments, restaurants, green space, and a brand new event center.
In the 1950s, Tom Vandergriff became mayor of Arlington. He brought the city into its largest period of growth yet, revitalizing the area with the growth of the entertainment district, the creation of jobs, and tourist attractions. He brought a baseball team to Arlington, which was named the Texas Rangers. He also opened a theme park, called Six Flags over Texas, which brought people far and wide to visit the park and Arlington. Perhaps one of the things he is most known for is opening the General Motors plant on the east side of Arlington, which brought a large number jobs to Arlington and spurred economic growth in the area.
Today, Arlington is a booming city conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth. Many families live in the city and enjoy the various parks, shopping, and entertainment. It is a great place to buy a home, and a great place to find a home inspector!
